Chapter 3

3. Where to apply Lift & Shift?

Lift and Shift to solve…

If you want a quick migration to the Cloud, then Lift & Shift is the best approach since it doesn’t require workload transformation. With the use of Velostrata, the speed of migration increases substantially, as it allows for the migration of data in the background, as well as the automation of migration in waves (multiple workloads migrating in parallel).

This methodology is ideal for monolithic applications or legacy systems, where for a wide range of reasons such as licensing, complexity or application lifecycle, it is not possible to change the way they work.

Migrating to the Cloud is a process and the ‘Lift & Shift’ approach is the fastest and easiest way to eliminate indirect costs of on-site server maintenance. By simply migrating workloads to the Cloud, the Organisation ensures that they are continually run with minimal service interruption, avoiding high costs of rebuilding or redesigning your workloads.

This approach also allows mitigating resistance to change. Being a relatively fast process, it avoids the duality of environments and the resistance to changing to a Cloud environment where the entire technological stack is not controlled.

«It is a means to an end, not an end in itself», ‘Lift & Shift’ may be the first phase in a workload cloudification strategy. In this scenario, Organisations eliminate maintenance costs of multiple environments, as well as natural resistance to change, taking advantage of some cloud valences such as elasticity.

Subsequently, other strategies can be adopted to optimise resources for example Application Modernisation strategies and even Replatform.
