Chapter 5

5. Conclusions: Successfully Implementing Lift-and-Shift Methodology Using Velostrata

Introducing a tool like Velostrata into the cloud migration process, particularly for Google Cloud Platform, makes it fast, flexible, and secure. When we talk about migration processes the greatest focus is always on the risks and the agility of the process. In the next paragraphs, we highlight the benefits of using this tool, as well as some recommendations that should be considered for efficient migration.

Background data migration is one of the greatest benefits when it comes to Velostrata. A few minutes after the migration begins, applications begin to run on the GCP, keeping the remaining data transfer and synchronisation continuous in the background, allowing users not to detect any impact on application usage. This feature greatly reduces the downtime of services when compared to traditional migration systems where the application is only available after the data has fully migrated to the Cloud environment.

Using migration in waves is another highlight of this tool. This feature allows the migration of multiple VMs with only a single iteration by the user who manages the process, making it much faster. In this migration process, the data that is loaded into the Runbook (already referenced throughout this report) is validated, which reduces the risk of incompatibility during the migration process.

Another point to mention is the rollback to the source environment, be it On-Prem or another Cloud environment, without data loss. If the process is not going as planned, it is ideal to revert to the source environment and start the process again by making the necessary adjustments.

Validation tests using clones of applications that are intended to be migrated is another strength of the tool. In this way it is possible to validate the correct function of them in the Cloud environment without any impact on the active applications, allowing possible points of failure to be identified when the final migration is carried out.

As a weak point, we should mention the exclusivity of the use of this tool in On-Prem environments based on VMware (versions: 5.5U1, 6.0 U1, 6.5, 6.7) as well as the need for resources in this environment that meet the characteristics of the components to be installed (Velostrata Backend appliance). In environments with very high security restrictions at this point can be an obstacle given that it is not always possible to install external components in the environments of certain Companies. However, this is still a mandatory requirement for the implementation and operation of the entire migration workflow. We also refer to the process of migration of physical machines as a weak point. Unlike virtual machines, you can only migrate in write-isolation mode, which means, data changes made with the VM in the Cloud are not synchronised to the On-Prem environment. Another point about the migration of physical machines is that it is only applicable to HP Enterprise (ILO) or Dell (iDRAC) systems.
